Drishti (Sanskrit for “sight” or “gaze”) is the South Indian name for the evil eye — called nazar in North India. The belief: when someone looks at your success, beauty, new car or new baby with envy — or even with too much admiration — that gaze can stick to you and bring bad luck.
The classic remedy is drishti suththi poduthal: an elder, usually a grandmother, takes rock salt, dried red chillies or burning camphor in her fist and circles it around you three times to absorb the negativity. The salt is then dissolved in water; the chillies go into the fire — and if they burn without crackling, there was no eye on you. If they pop and sputter… someone definitely looked!
